Finding New Uses For Old Supplies

January 09, 2007 by Debbie Fitzgerald

The New Year is often a time to take inventory and make resolutions. As I’ve been evaluating my scrap area and how to organize it, I’ve found I have many supplies that are not getting used. Let’s face it… most of us have scrap items that were “in” when we bought them. But the scrapping industry changes quickly and our once “mod” supplies are now old. What is a supply hoarder to do?

I went in search of different tips and techniques to breathe new life into some of these older supplies. Here are some ideas for you to try:

Patterned Paper –If you are like me, you have some patterned paper that is too busy or cutesy for your current tastes. Try cutting it up and using smaller pieces on your page. Cut into strips and use it to make serendipity squares or even smaller pieces for mosaics. Cut out or punch small shapes from it and adhere to a cardstock background for a unique background.

Templates – Use letter templates on fabric or a sheet of chipboard to create updated letters for a title.

Punches – Talk about a versatile tool! Use punched shapes as masks - first temporarily adhere them and paint over them, then remove when the paint or ink is dry. Or punch along the edge of paper or cardstock to create an interesting border. Layer punched cardstock over patterned paper. Try cutting out along the edges of the negative for a fun embellishment. Add some penwork for good measure.

Stickers – Trim around the negative of a sticker to create a “new” one. If you have stickers that you don’t like because of the color or pattern, change them with paint, ink, or embossing powder. Stickers can be updated by adding beads, doodles or glitter. Adhere stickers to the page with pop dots to add dimension. Cut up leftover word stickers to get individual letters and use them to create a ransom note type appearance to titles.

Fibers – Write out a title or create a doodle. Glue a fiber along your word or doodle. Create a flower by gluing fiber loops to the page. Cover the overlaps in the center with a brad or button. Use thin fibers for hand stitching.

So maybe I won’t need to pitch my older supplies after all. With a bit of creativity, what was old can be made new again. This year I think I will resolve to work more of my older items onto my pages. How about you?
