Customized Coordinating Creations

May 23, 2007 by Tracy Marshall

Don't you just love it, that so many scrapbooking companies have coordinating lines of paper and embellishments? They make it almost impossible to go wrong by offering lines that are elaborate enough to include matching patterned paper, ribbon, monograms, fibers, die cuts, transparencies, chipboard, metal embellishments, and more!
Don't you just hate it when you're working with a line that doesn't have as many complementary accessories as you would like? Don't sweat it. Make you own, and don't fret if you don't have die cut tools or software to help you.  In so many instances you can use the embellishments in one line as a guide to create new ones for another line.
I happen to love Bazzill Basics Paper line of cardstock with the scalloped and pinked edges. One of my favorite things to do is to trace their outer edges onto patterned paper, cut it out, and then use it for layering.  You can use the same technique to make customized monograms and die cuts. In fact, you can make permanent patterns by tracing them onto, and cutting them out of chipboard. This way you can hoard items for the sake and pure joy of hoarding and not for the sake of using them as a guide in the future.
Making your own fabric ribbon isn't quite as simple, however, you can simulate the look of ribbon by simply using strips of patterned paper or cardstock. The strips can be as wide or narrow as you like and you can layer them, fold them, adorn, and weave them in many of the same ways that you would use actual ribbon.  You can even use ribbon slides with them.
Don't be afraid to experiment. Use your rubber or acrylic stamps and ink to create images. Cut them out to make other matching adornments. If you're feeling adventuresome, cut out free-hand shapes to do the same. Using what you already have to make what you need can result in creative and appealing layouts as well as cost savings!
